WhatsApp is testing live voice chat with Meta AI in its Android beta (v2.25.21.21), enabling two-way dialogue with the AI assistant via a waveform icon.
Users can start voice mode from the Chats tab by tapping the waveform button or directly from the Calls tab, where the AI icon switches to a waveform automatically.
A setting in Voice Preferences (disabled by default) lets users automatically launch voice chat upon opening Meta AI, offering hands-free interaction with full control.
Voice chat continues even when users switch to other apps—perfect for dictating, browsing, or multitasking—thanks to a collapse icon that keeps it active in the background.
The interface displays suggested prompts to help kick off conversations. To end the session, users can tap ‘X’, exit the chat, or start typing to revert to text.
The feature is currently live only for select Android beta users, with a wider rollout expected in the coming weeks.
