We all know someone who sends a bunch of texts in a row, or an app that keeps sending you notifications. Alert sounds can get annoying, especially if you’re trying to concentrate on something else.
You can use notification channels or just put your phone on silent for a while, but that takes effort and you might miss important alerts. Android 15 has a solution to this problem, and we’re finally seeing it in the first developer beta released this week. Android 14 has a bunch of features to help you deal with annoying notifications, like notification channels. These let you turn off alerts for specific app features, like sale and promo alerts from a shopping app.
But this trick might not work well for notifications from our favorite chat apps. Android expert Mishaal Rahman noticed a cool solution in the Android 14 QPR2 beta, where the notification volume would go down if you get too many notifications in a row from the same app.
The first developer preview for Android 15 came out on Friday, and Rahman noticed this feature called Notification cooldown. You can find it on the main notifications settings page, under Settings → Notifications → Notification cooldown.
Interestingly, the screenshots Rahman shared don’t have a toggle switch or any other way to turn on Notification cooldown on your device. Maybe the feature will be more developed in future builds before the public beta comes out. But it’s good to know that the feature description matches what we saw in the Android 14 beta last year.
Once this new feature is widely available, you won’t have to put your phone on silent yourself or worry about missing important calls and other alerts just because someone is texting you a lot. But even the current stable version of Android has lots of notification controls you can use to cut down on spam and distractions.
