Samsung has Galaxy Z Flip 6 in works with older chip, 12GB RAM

In the coming months, Samsung is expected to reveal its next-gen foldable phones, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 and the Galaxy Z Fold 6. Both phones are anticipated to feature the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon chip. However, Samsung may have alternative plans, as there are reports of the Z Flip 6 being tested with an older chip.

Recently, the US version of the Galaxy Z Flip 6 (SM-F741U) appeared in Geekbench’s database with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 (codenamed Pineapple) processor and 8GB of RAM. However, the same model number has now been discovered with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor (codenamed Kalama) and 12GB of RAM.

As shown in the screenshot, the Galaxy Z Flip 6 seems to be operating on Android 14, as anticipated. It achieved a score of 1,794 points in Geekbench 6’s single-core CPU performance test and 4,486 points in the multi-core CPU performance test. This is somewhat perplexing, given that Samsung typically utilizes the latest top-tier Snapdragon chips in its foldable devices.

It seems Samsung is experimenting with two versions of the Galaxy Z Flip 6, one equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and the other with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. If the company opts for last year’s chip, it would be a surprising yet sensible decision.

The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 remains a robust processor capable of handling most Galaxy AI features while delivering excellent power efficiency. Additionally, the upgrade to 12GB of RAM is significant, marking the first time a Galaxy Z Flip model would boast more than 8GB of RAM.

There’s also the possibility that someone altered the model number of a Galaxy S23 Ultra to make it look like the Galaxy Z Flip 6. We’ll likely get a clearer picture as we approach the official announcement of the Galaxy Z Flip 6.

Many might have come across news of a peculiar Galaxy Z Flip 6 benchmark, which revealed an unexpected hardware setup, including the use of an outdated chip. While it’s anticipated that the Galaxy Z Flip 6 would feature the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, a recent Geekbench entry indicated that the phone might actually be powered by the older Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 instead.

Following the initial reports, we conducted further investigation to gather more reliable details. As it appears, there is no actual Galaxy Z Flip 6 model equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip. The benchmark entry was fabricated.
